INSTRUCTIONS FOR CURLING HAIR IN THE TRADITIONAL MANNER

Hair must be completely dry before curling or the hair will remain damp and the curls will
not take.  DO NOT USE CONDITIONER AFTER WASHING.
No matter how straight your childs hair is , if you follow the directions correctly and do not
use too much hair in each curler it will set.

You will need the following supplies:
Pink sponge curlers  ( you can get these pretty much anywhere)
or soft spikes  Irish dance curlers  sold from Irish Dance suppliers
Perm end wrappers(  not necessary but they help keep ends smooth)
Maximum hold setting lotion or styling gel
Comb,  elastic coated rubber band , scrunchie and /or headband
Extra hold hair spray

Please take your time, this process will take awhile the first time, but you will get quicker as
you do it more often.   It may take about  1 1/2 hours on your first attempt.  (that is why  some
people opt for the wigs)   Depending on how thick your daughters hair, it can take from 60 to
100 curlers.   The smaller amount of hair you put in each roller, the more curls you get, and
the better it looks.

First:  take a section of hair on the top front of the head into a pony (top 1/3 of the hair)
and secure with an elastic band
If your child has bangs you do not have to include them in the pony tail.
Apply gel to the pony tail and roll SMALL sections of hair on to curlers
( this should take at least 7-  10 curlers just for the pony tail)
Remember to roll each curler tightly , the goal is for tight not loose curls.

Now begin setting the rest of the head.  Use a comb to section hair into thin rows applying the
gel or setting to each section as you roll it. Use as many rollers as possible.
As you finish each row, start another below it, until you have finished the entire head. The
last row at the bottom doesn't have to be rolled as tightly since it wont show, and it is easier
to sleep in if this row isn't so tight.
Leave the curlers in overnight.  ( some dancers leave them in until they arrive at the feis)

When you are ready to remove the curlers, slip the scrunchie over the ponytail, or slip the
headband over your head and leave around your neck until finished.
Then gently unroll each curler, DO NOT PULL STRAIGHT DOWN  but unravel them to keep
the curls intact.  Separate each curl with your fingers, and then SPRAY WITH EXTRA HOLD
HAIR SPRAY.
Slip headband into place and you are done!
